The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences is seeking an 80% Medical Scribe (Clerk Typist III; GB62) to generate prompt documentation of patient care information/activities as dictated by assigned providers both within and outside of the clinic setting in the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences. This position supports Dr. H. Culver Boldt and Dr. Chris Sales in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. Duties involve the use of personal computers, computer terminals, and a variety of software some of which may be discipline specific and conventional office equipment. Key duties include:
- Works within a clinic setting as a medical scribe preparing and typing complex medical records, requiring specialized terminology (i.e. medical terminology, etc.) as dictated by assigned providers in order to improve clinic efficiency and flow.
- Provides accurate documentation of patient history, examination, results of imaging/tests and discussions within the electronic medical record while in the exam room with the physician and patient.
- Prepares and assembles medical record documentation for the physician(s) prior to patient visits.
- Maintains worklists for the physicians outside of patient care including but not limited to, answering e-mails and updating documentation for billing matters.
- Reviews completed documents to assure correctness of citations, unity and coherence, as well as terminology, spelling and grammar.
- Makes recommendations on formatting, style, layout, and type of documentation related to patient care.
- Transfers reports and articles and converts images for posting to the web.
- Performs clerical and secretarial tasks for the unit such as composes routine correspondence, greets and assists patients, answers the phones, initiates forms and documents, schedules meetings, and integrates information for producing reports for assigned providers as needed.
- Responsible for effectively communicating patient and exam information to assigned provider(s) from referring providers, technicians, and other healthcare personnel.
- Assists assigned provider(s) by making phone calls and locating ordering providers for communication from the provider.
- Reviews EPIC reading work lists and Status Reports to assist providers with required workflows in order to improve clinic efficiency.
- Pre-charts for assigned providers to prepare for clinic days.
- Troubleshoots clinic/patient care issues as needed.
- Effectively communicates with all members of the patient care team.
- Assists with special projects as assigned by assigned providers.
Percent of Time: 80%
Schedule: Mondays (8:00a - 5:00p; 1 hour lunch; remote); Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays (8:00a - 5:00p; 1 hour lunch; on site). Thursdays off.

Location: UIHC and Iowa River Landing per physician schedule
Hybrid within Iowa: This position is eligible for a combination of on-campus and remote work. Remote work must be performed at a location within the state of Iowa and comply with the remote work program and related policies.
Salary: $38,314.80 - Commensurate
Pay Grade: 08

Minimum Eligibility Requirements Any combination of related clerical office experience related undergraduate education and/or post high school clerical training that is the equivalent to two years of full-time employment and includes the use of word processing.
Desirable Qualifications - At least 6 months of previous clinical administrative experience preferably scribing for physicians entering medical information into an electronic medical record.
- Previous EPIC experience.
- Demonstrated attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and ability to prioritize and multi-task.
- Excellent communication skills.
