The Department of History's faculty members have areas of expertise ranging across the globe, and covering the entire period from the ancient world to the dawn of the twenty-first century.

Position Summary:

The Harrison Ruffin Tyler Department of History and the Program in Africana Studies at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, seek applications for a jointly-appointed tenure-track position at the Assistant, Associate, or Professor level in modern African history from 1800 to the present. Regional specialization is open. Appointment will begin August 10, 2025.Duties include research, teaching, and service to the Department of History, Africana Studies, and University. The applicant is expected to establish and maintain a vibrant research program that inspires a highly motivated undergraduate student body as well as M.A. and Ph.D. students.Teaching expectation is 2 courses per year in both History and Africana Studies (4 courses in total). This is a joint position between History (50%, undergraduate and graduate) and Africana Studies (50%, undergraduate). Successful applicants must possess the skills to teach compelling African history surveys, freshmen seminars, upper-division courses in African history and Africana Studies, and occasional graduate seminars, as well as other lecture and seminar-style courses. Successful applicants should also be able to enter the rotation of professors who teach an interdisciplinary undergraduate class titled "Introduction to African Studies."

Required Qualifications:

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in History, African, or Africana Studies or a related field at the time appointment begins (August 10, 2025).

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience in teaching and mentoring successful undergraduate research is preferred.
