ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

Job Summary
Assist in the development, implementation, coordination, and assessment of retention programs, services, and activities for the Bruce D. Nesbitt African American Cultural Center (BNAACC) that educate and promote a campus-wide understanding of Black history, contributions, and issues/challenges of importance to Black communities. Assist with advising and providing leadership training for Black students and student groups.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR

Job Summary

Assist in the development, implementation, coordination and assessment of retention programs, services, and activities for the Bruce D. Nesbitt African American Cultural Center (BNAACC) that educate and promote a campus-wide understanding of Black history, contributions, and issues/challenges of importance to Black communities. Serve as primary supervisor for BNAACC student interns and assume responsibility for the center in the absence of the Director.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

Duties & Responsibilities

Targeted Retention

  • Serve as the primary advisor for BNAACC's signature retention initiative, the 100 STRONG Program; supervise a board of student leaders; assess the program's impact; modify the curriculum as needed; utilize culturally relevant and evidence-based retention practices to inform the work of 100 STRONG.
  • Serve as the lead organizer for BNAACC's pre-orientation program, the Circuit; develop a curriculum that aligns with the Illinois Strategic plan and uses evidence-based best practices and benchmarks.
  • Coordinate and promote the annual campus-wide Black Congratulatory celebration. This includes the planning and implementation of the program by leading the student committee.
Supervision
  • Serve as a co-supervisor for the BNAACC Interns. Coordinate the recruitment, hiring, training, teaching, supervision, and evaluation of student interns.
  • Provide professional learning experiences (leadership retreats/trainings) that enable student interns to develop the personal and professional skills needed to thrive in a diverse society.
  • Advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters (e.g. identity exploration) and provide appropriate recommendations and referrals.
  • Determine appropriate course of action and proper technique to utilize while engaging with students in problem solving, professional boundaries, and conflict resolution skills.
Cultural Programming, Workshops & Trainings
  • Develop, maintain, and collaborate with other units and campus/community partners to develop programs that encompass various intersecting identities across the Black diaspora (e.g. ability, sexuality, genders, ethnicities, nationalities, immigrations, religions, etc.).
  • Develop, create and/or maintain curriculum and resource development for BNAACC trainings/presentations.
  • Collaborate with La Casa Cultural Latina to convene and lead the planning and implementation of the Black and Latinx Summit, serving as the Co-Advisor for the summit committee.
Assessment, Evaluation & Archive
  • Oversee ongoing evaluation of programs and activities.
  • Maintain and archive documentation/files on all events; including but not limited to program flyers and marketing, photo/video, etc. with the Illinois Student Life Archives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Administrative
  • Maintain and develop BNAACC communications (i.e. BNAACC Newsletter, BNAACC Digital Sign, and BNAACC email inboxes).
  • Assist with semesterly reporting.
  • Other duties as assigned
ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR

  • Co-coordinate the Black Leadership Organization Coalition ( The B.L.O.C) - a group of Presidents and Vice-Presidents of various student organizations. Advise and mentor the student organization leaders in strategic planning, goal setting, and effective leadership practices.
  • Coordinate and promote the annual campus-wide Black Congratulatory celebration. This includes the planning and implementation of the program by leading the student committee.
Supervision
  • Serve as a co-supervisor for the BNAACC Interns. Coordinate the recruitment, hiring, training, teaching, supervision, and evaluation of student interns.

  • Spearhead the development of culturally responsive and interdisciplinary programs, workshops and trainings that highlight and appreciate Black cultures/ identities/ communities for Black students and the campus within a local and global context.
  • Develop, maintain, and collaborate with other units and campus/community partners to develop programs that encompass various intersecting identities across the Black diaspora (e.g. ability, sexuality, genders, ethnicities, nationalities, immigrations, religions, etc.).

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree.
Experience:
  • Two (2) years of work experience in diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated experience providing leadership development and training opportunities.
  • Experience coordinating cultural, social, educational and/or social justice programs focused on Black students and/or staff/faculty.
Preferred Qualifications

Experience:
  • Experience in workshop and program creation and facilitation.
  • Professional experience advising and creating leadership development opportunities for students and/or organizations.
  • Experience in making and presenting data-driven decisions in support of student success, inclusion, and belonging.
ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree.
Experience:
  • Three (3) years of work experience working in diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated supervision and equity-centered training experience.
  • Experience coordinating cultural, social, educational and/or social justice programs focused on Black students and/or staff/faculty.
Preferred Qualifications

Education:
  • Master's degree in higher education administration, college student personnel, the humanities, counseling, or related field.
Experience:
  • Experience in workshop and curriculum development.
  • Professional experience advising and creating leadership development opportunities for students and/or organizations.
  • Experience in formative and summative assessment and evaluation.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (ASSISTANT & ASSOCIATE)
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of cultural community care.

  • Specific knowledge (history, culture, identities, etc.) of Black communities.
Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5002 - Program Coordinator position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 8/19/2024. Salary range for the Assistant Director: $56,000 - $62,000; Associate Director: $75,000 - $82,000.
