Summary of Position

Tenure Track Assistant/Associate Professor in Global Health Studies. The interdisciplinary program in Global Health Studies at Allegheny College is accepting applications for a tenure-track position at Assistant or Associate Professor rank beginning in August 2025. Candidates must have a PhD, DrPH, or terminal degree and demonstrated experience in qualitative approaches to health using ethnographic methods. We welcome applicants who are passionate about undergraduate teaching who have a background in health/medical sociology, health geography, medical ethics, medical anthropology, or other related fields. Applications from individuals with international focus or experience are particularly encouraged.

Global Health Studies at Allegheny College promotes an interdisciplinary understanding of local and global health issues. Our program underscores the environmental and structural determinants of health as well as the ethical and intercultural dimensions of health and health policy. Teaching responsibility is 6 course equivalencies per year and will include participation in the core Global Health Studies courses (such as Intro to Global Health; Investigative Approaches in Global Health; and Qualitative Methods in Health), senior thesis advising, campus-wide writing & speaking seminars, and upper-level course(s) in an area of global health specialty. The ability to address ethical aspects of global health is desirable.

Candidates must demonstrate: (a) a commitment to undergraduate teaching and research, and (b) expertise in public health at the local and/or global scale. The successful candidate will provide evidence of excellence in undergraduate teaching, ongoing scholarship, and professional development. Excellent teaching and research facilities are available. The successful candidate may also have the opportunity to contribute to the undergraduate and graduate healthcare management programs that build on the college's commitment to the liberal arts and rich interdisciplinary programming.

Global Health Studies at Allegheny College is the nation's first undergraduate major/minor global health program at a liberal arts institution. Created with generous support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, it is a leader in undergraduate global health education. Allegheny is also a national leader in sustainability. It was the eighth institution of higher education in the United States to achieve carbon neutrality, highlighting more than twenty years of commitment to addressing the impacts of climate change, one of the world's most pressing public health challenges.
