Purpose of Position:The Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance at Christopher Newport University invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Music Theater effective August 2025. This position is a full-time, tenure-track appointment with a nominal teaching load of 3-3.
The primary responsibilities will include teaching applied music theater voice and music theater masterclasses for students in the musical theatre concentration. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the department curriculum as appropriate and consistent with experience and specialization. Additionally, the individual will have responsibility for the continuation of successful cabaret programs within the concentration. Ability and/or experience in music direction, stage direction and/or vocal coaching of music theatre productions is highly desirable. Special consideration will be given to candidates who can help facilitate opportunities for students to gain professional experience outside the classroom. Additional classroom teaching experience will also be considered.
We seek a candidate with a terminal degree in a relevant field (Theatre, Fine Arts, or Music), or a master's in a related field, and significant professional experience in music theatre performance. Preference will be given to those with experience in teaching undergraduates.
The Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance at Christopher Newport University is composed of 22 faculty and 150+ majors.
