Assistant Professor of Health Policy - CE or Tenure Track

Location: Philadelphia, PA
Open Date: Aug 29, 2024
Deadline: Sep 29, 2026 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time

The Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for several Assistant Professor positions in either the non-tenure clinician educator track or the tenure track. Expertise is required in the specific area of population health, which includes (but is not limited to) identifying patterns and drivers of health behaviors, morbidity, and mortality and health disparities; evaluating the impacts of health and social policies or environmental factors on a range of health behaviors and outcomes; evaluating the effects of food and nutrition policies on diet and health; evaluating the impacts of climate change on health and well-being; and conducting intervention studies to improve population health outcomes at local, state, national, or global levels. Candidates with backgrounds in economics, epidemiology, psychology, demography, sociology, political science, or interdisciplinary methods are encouraged to apply. Experience with observational or experimental studies using statistical and/or econometric methods is necessary. Applicants must have an M.D. or Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. or equivalent degree.

Teaching responsibilities may include courses in research methods, population health, health policy, or food policy. Faculty candidates will have opportunities to mentor diverse graduate students, medical students, residents, clinical fellows, undergraduates, and postdoctoral trainees.

Research or scholarship responsibilities may include establishing an innovative and independent research program that includes publications in leading peer-reviewed journals and that can be supported with extramural funding from government agencies and private foundations. While both tenure and clinician-educator track faculty conduct methodological and collaborative research, tenure track faculty focus primarily on independent, investigator driven research while clinician-educator track faculty focus primarily on collaboration.

The position will be based in the Division of Health Policy, which is within the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy. The Division has faculty who are trained in economics, medicine, psychology, epidemiology, and public health and who do research in a broad array of areas including health economics, behavioral economics, health services, health equity, physician and patient behavior, aging, social determinants of health, global health, and food policy.
The successful applicant(s) for this position(s) will:
(1) Demonstrate their ability to develop and maintain a high-impact research program including extramurally funded projects;
(2) Increase the Department's instructional and research capacity in their areas of focus;
(3) Contribute to the Department's mission through collaboration with other faculty members, staff, and students.
(4) Engage with policymakers, healthcare organizations, and community stakeholders.

We are profoundly committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We seek candidates who foster and share this commitment and who embrace and reflect diversity in the broadest sense. We strongly encourage candidates from groups that have been underrepresented in medicine and population science due to discrimination and structural barriers, who have experienced socioeconomic disadvantage, or who have disabilities to apply.

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, but full consideration will be given to applications received by November 1st, 2024.

We seek candidates who embrace and reflect diversity in the broadest sense. The University of Pennsylvania is an EOE. Minorities/women/individuals with disabilities/protected veterans are encouraged to apply.
