Unit Mission Statement:

The Department of Music is committed to teaching the discipline of music through its interrelated subdisciplines (music theory, musicology, ethnomusicology, music technology, performance, and composition) in the context of a liberal arts curriculum. The Department of Music strives to create a learning environment that encourages the intellectual and personal development of student and teacher alike; we do so by integrating the transmission of knowledge with original research, composition, and performance. The department's course offerings represent a standing commitment to the study of diverse musical styles and the music of many cultures. At the same time, we also recognize the vital importance of continuing to teach the traditions that have historically informed the practice of music in the United States and Europe.

Position Summary:

The Department of Music at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in composition, electronic music and/or sound art, with a focus on the innovative integration of technology in both practice and pedagogy. The appointment will begin August 10, 2025.

We are seeking a creative artist and/or producer with exceptional potential, whose work will complement and enrich the work of our existing faculty. The ideal candidate will be an active practitioner with a distinctive perspective and a contemporary and/or experimental approach and record of sustained engagement with non-academic outlets and/or audiences. Our department is composed of scholars, composers, and performers, offering a flexible program to undergraduate liberal arts students. We emphasize teaching music through its interconnected subdisciplines-composition, technology, performance, theory, ethnomusicology, and musicology-and are dedicated to advancing the diversity and interdisciplinarity of our faculty.

Duties include research, teaching, and service to the university. The successful candidate will have advanced studio experience, collaboratively co-manage our newly constructed music technology facilities, and play a central role in shaping our music and sound technology program. We seek individuals with expertise in recording, music production and/or computer music, along with substantial teaching experience. The applicant is expected to establish and maintain a vibrant research program that inspires a highly motivated undergraduate student body. Teaching expectation is 2 courses per semester. Successful applicants must possess the skills to teach compelling courses in music technology including recording engineering, music theory, composition, and to contribute courses in these areas to the core undergraduate COLL curriculum."

Required Qualifications:

Applicants must hold an MFA, DMA, or PhD in Music or a related field at the time appointment begins, August 10, 2025.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience in teaching and mentoring successful undergraduate creative output and/or written research is preferred. Evidence of artistic or scholarly achievement or demonstrated potential as an artist or scholar. Candidates with skills in beat making, popular music production (including dance, hip hop, pop), modular synthesis, instrument building, interactive software and hardware, or other specialized music technologies are especially encouraged to apply. We also welcome applications from multimedia and interdisciplinary artists with unconventional music or sound profiles.
