Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

Student Conduct is responsible for overseeing and advising the Honor System and adjudicating violations that fall within the purview of the University's alcohol policy. We oversee the administration of the student conduct process.

Position Summary:

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

The Associate Director of Student Conduct reports to the Director of Student Conduct within Student Affairs and is a team member of Student Conduct. The Associate Director will serve as the point of contact in the absence of the Director. They have responsibilities for supporting the daily functioning of Student Conduct in serving as a Hearing Officer, advising the Conduct Board, completing disciplinary history requests, and participating in education and programming initiatives designed to meet the needs of the student body and the larger University community. This position will serve as a liaison to graduate and professional schools and programs and serve as a primary university investigator for student organizational misconduct. This position requires the exercise of sound discretion in the advising and training of students, faculty, and staff; the implementation of complex University policies; and the recording and collection of data and information concerning students used for reporting purposes at the University, state, and federal levels. This position encompasses a wide variety of crisis response and management, counseling, education, research, and supervisory duties in the areas of case and program management, outreach activities, training, and building relationships across the campus community. The position is charged with working as a part of a team and providing leadership for implementing the student conduct process for applicable University policy. Student Conduct is responsible for overseeing and adjudicating violations that fall within the purview of the Student Code of Conduct, including the alcohol policy, through Student Conduct Procedures.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities associated with the delivery and/or management of student support functions, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and at least 1 year of relevant experience in substitution.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

The successful candidate will be student-focused, team-oriented, knowledgeable on relevant policy application and intersection with laws and regulations, to demonstrate a record of the following:

  • Superior interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate with large and diverse audiences in addition to individual encounters.
  • Experience working with diverse undergraduate and graduate/professional student, faculty, or staff communities, which reflect an array of ethnic, racial, cultural, faith, gender, and other identities.
  • Deep understanding and experience managing various aspects associated with conflict resolution, including capacity to deliver effective due process in accordance with applicable policies.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential and sensitive situations with diplomacy and sound judgment.
  • Proven ability and willingness to promote collaborative work environment and build relationships with departmental staff and campus colleagues.
  • Experience managing crises and resolving complex tasks and matters both independently and as a team.
  • Expertise and knowledge with the application of university, state, and federal laws, policies, and regulations regarding student conduct, the Clery Act and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Experience with administrative disciplinary proceedings.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and case management databases (such as Maxient) coupled with the ability to effectively integrate technology into service delivery, including experience with reports and presentation, and virtual meeting platforms (such as Zoom and Teams).
  • Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

  • Master's degree in Student Affairs Administration, Higher Education Administration, or similarly related field.
  • At least five (5) years of professional experience in a conduct, care, advising, case management position, or similar related experiences in Higher Education.
  • Understanding of current trends and issues within student conduct and higher education.
  • Experience with administrative disciplinary proceedings or prior adjudication experience at a college or university.
  • Experience advising, training, or mentoring students.
  • Experience with training development and facilitation.
  • Experience with case management and database management.
Campus Security Authority Responsibilities:

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
