The Office of the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs is hiring an Associate Provost for Faculty Excellence to work in partnership with other Office of the Provost colleagues, the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, deans, and college diversity officers to strengthen a diverse faculty pipeline, promote an equitable, inclusive faculty climate and culture, and utilize data-driven methods to increase faculty excellence. Reporting to the Executive Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, the Associate Provost for Faculty Excellence is responsible for processes, programs and policies to assess and advance faculty diversity and inclusion while stewarding faculty excellence at Illinois.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Faculty Inclusive Excellence Initiatives
    • Initiate and lead discussions on campus related to faculty inclusive excellence.
      • Partner with appropriate stakeholders, including the OVCDEI, to engage colleges and units around equity and inclusion.
    • Identify and disseminate evidence-based practices that promote equitable and inclusive approaches in recruiting, supporting, and retaining faculty from underrepresented groups.
      • Identify specific support and resource needs of affinity groups among underrepresented faculty.
      • Collaborate with colleges (i.e., Diversity Officers), campus units engaged in DEI efforts, and campus affinity groups to share best practices and access resources and supports for underrepresented faculty.
    • Develop resources and programming to support recognition of the contributions of faculty from underrepresented groups.
  • Program Implementation and Evaluation
    • Lead the implementation, evaluation, and revision of resources and programs to support faculty diversity and inclusion.
      • Develop a sustainable approach to deliver the Diversity and Equity in P&T workshop curriculum. Update the workshop on a regular basis and offer regular sessions to faculty members and unit executive officers across campus.
      • Develop, implement, evaluate, and update programs and resources related to the documentation of DEI activities in P&T dossiers, including support for early and mid-career faculty to assist with the preparation of statements.
      • Offer concomitant training for unit executive officers, senior faculty, and promotion committees tasked with evaluating faculty DEI statements.
  • Policy and Procedure Development
    • Coordinate the review, development, and revision of policies, procedures, and activities affecting faculty inclusive excellence.
      • Engage with colleges, faculty senate, campus committees, units and offices, and other relevant stakeholder groups throughout the process of developing/revising relevant policies and procedures.
  • Collaboration and Data Collection
    • Collaborate with the Office of the Provost Academic Affairs team to collect and maintain annual data on unit/campus recruitment, hiring, promotion, and retention of faculty members and academic leaders from underrepresented groups.
    • Working with stakeholders in the OVCDEI, Graduate College, Illinois Human Resources, and the colleges, coordinate the campus post-doctoral programs, including the development of mentoring programs to support the post-doctoral fellows.
    • As appropriate, work with external partners, peer institutions, and consortia to share data, resources and best practices that promote faculty diversity and excellence.
Required Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. or terminal degree.
  • Must be a current UIUC faculty member.
  • Minimum three (3) years of academic administrative experience in higher education.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • A track record of collaboration and success in coordinating and leading a broad range of diversity initiatives in a complex University environment.
  • Strong leadership, administrative, and presentation skills, including oral and written communication.
  • Ability to think strategically and develop a shared vision.
  • A sense of optimism and possibility about the goals and activities of the University in this space.
Appointment Information:

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search. The budgeted administrative stipend range for this administrative appointment is $15,000.00 to $40,000.00. Total compensation for the administrative position includes the administrative stipend in addition to the base salary of the faculty appointment, adjusted appropriately for the service period of the administrative appointment. The stipend is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
