As the Chief Nurse Anesthetist, you will have the exceptional opportunity to plan, organize, and coordinate the activities of our nurse anesthetist staff, ensuring flawless department operations.
About the role
Under general supervision of the Salem Hospital Department Chair of Anesthesia and reporting directly to the Senior Administrative Manager of Enterprise Anesthesiology, incumbent plans, organizes, budgets and coordinates the activities of the nurse anesthetist staff. The Chief Nurse Anesthetist is responsible for the direction, guidance, and evaluation of his/her department nursing personnel; for maintaining effective working relationships with intra-interdisciplinary personnel who provide support services to the department; and for the delegation of his/her authority to insure coordination of activities necessary for effective and efficient department operations.
Responsibilities
- Directs and develops the nurse anesthesia staff according to the practice, teaching and research goals of the anesthesia department.
- Participates in the development of nursing standards and departmental statements of policy appropriate to patient care.
- Implements approved policies and procedures necessary for the coordination and delivery of patient care.
- Delegates responsibility and authority to appropriate staff and develops systems for effective follow-up.
- In conjunction with the department Chair and Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs, interviews, hires, and on-boards all CRNAs for the department
- Recommends staffing patterns and required personnel complements to meet the needs of the department.
- Responds to staffing needs involving clinical shifts and schedule, in collaboration with leadership.
- Collaborates with Anesthesia Administration to ensure accurate weekly payroll, tracking all hours and authorizing overtime in QGenda.
- Conducts annual, criteria-based performance appraisals of nurse anesthetists.
- Is responsible for employee data changes, including merit increases, shift changes, terminations, etc..
- Implements progressive disciplinary action according to hospital policy in consultation with the Senior Administrative Manager and the Department Chair.
- Provides opportunities for staff to participate in educational programs within the hospital and professional community.
- Plans, directs and participates in regularly scheduled meetings to share information and problem solve with department personnel.
- In conjunction with the department Chair and Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs,, and appropriate hospital personnel, maintains a safe environment for patient/staff while executing daily operational activities necessary for effective unit functioning.
- Prepares and manages the anesthesia nursing personnel budget, authorizing hours worked, including overtime.
- Collaborates with Anesthesia Administration in preparation and management of materials/supplies budget.
- Collaborates with Anesthesia Administration in identifying and prioritizing capital budgetary needs.
- Considers feedback from colleagues and supervisors and initiates process improvement as indicated.
- Communicates directly with off-shift staff and supervisors to insure twenty-four hour accountability regarding patient care, personnel, and department management.
- Provides department orientation to nursing and other care providers regarding organization and operation.

Qualifications Qualifications
- Current Massachusetts licensure as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, or eligible for licensure as a CRNA
- Demonstrates clinical competence within the scope of clinical practice standards set by the department.
- Demonstrates leadership/managerial potential, which includes interpersonal competence and organizational skills.
