Job Description

  • ations, and departmental policy and procedure.
  • Performs regular manual and software tests, including electrical safety testing, of medical equipment for accuracy and efficiency of operation.
  • Identifies potential safety hazards of equipment, and documents actions taken to eliminate them.
  • Responds to work requests, daily, troubleshoots malfunctions and makes the necessary repairs in a timely and efficient manner to reduce the amount of downtime and to keep the department operating effectively.
  • Installs, repairs and maintains complex diagnostic, therapeutic, laboratory, and biomedical research equipment of electronic and mechanic components.
  • Replaces defective parts any medical equipment.
  • Schedules third party repair of equipment when needs are beyond the scope of the department's abilities.
  • Labels equipment with operational status and date preventive maintenance was performed. Enters status data into the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Submits documentation of completed inspection, preventive maintenance and service reports to supervisor for quality control purposes.
  • Maintains test equipment and tools in good working order.
2. Recommends changes to, modifies if approved and installs specialized medical equipment.

3. Communicates with nursing, allied health and medical staff, regularly, regarding equipment operation and problems to obtain information in order to resolve the problem and minimize the amount of down time.
  • Contacts internal patient support services department or external vendors to arrange for repair of or order parts for equipment.
4. Participates in the evaluation of new, rental or demonstration of medical equipment and makes recommendations concerning acquisition.

5. Observes general clinical engineering practices and respective departmental policies and procedures to promote the overall efficiency of repair service and operations for medical equipment.

6. Assists with maintenance of departmental records, such as maintenance requests, electrical safety forms, files, relevant statistics and technical manuals on biomedical equipment in accordance with The Joint Commission, federal, state and local regulations.

7. Assists conducting in-service educational programs on use and operation of relevant clinical equipment.

8. Takes on call assignments within the department schedule and serves affiliated facilities.

Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • Associate's degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology, Electronics Technology, or a commensurate combination of education and experience, is required.
  • Minimum of three years of installation, testing, maintenance and repair of medical equipment under the assigned service line is required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of electronics or biomedical engineering technology as applied to the calibration and repair of biomedical equipment and instrumentation, such as, schematic analysis, interpretation of equipment malfunctions and soldering techniques.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the use of specialized electronic/biomedical test equipment such as volt/ohm/ammeters, capacitance meters, power supplies, electrical safety analyzers, defibrillator and electrosurgical analyzers, and vacuum/pressure gauges/meters.
  • Knowledge of electronic component characteristics in relation to configuration in AC/DC circuits;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of color code conventions used in component and wiring marking;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of digital electronics/microprocessor concepts, Boolean algebra and logical truth tables;
  • Knowledge of and ability to use electronic and pneumatic measuring devices.
  • Demonstrated ability to use volt/ohm/ammeter, oscilloscope, frequency counter, function generator, DC power supply, soldering and de-soldering tools, electrical safety analyzer, defibrillator and electrosurgical analyzers, and physiological vital signs simulator.
  • Proficiency in the use of tools and soldering/desoldering equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical/electronic circuit schematics properly is required.
  • Ability to recognize electronic components and their symbols as used in schematic diagrams.
  • Ability to use a computer and appropriate data entry device to perform data entry of statistical information into the department's computerized database is required for Biomedical Engineering Technicians working in the central Clinical Engineering department.
  • Familiarity with basic anatomy and physiology as applied to the use and operation of clinical and radiological equipment.
  • Effective verbal communication skills are required to work with management and clinical staff, external vendors and technical staff. Effective writing skills are necessary to write deficiency reports on equipment. Ability to read complex technical equipment operation manuals.
