Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The Department of Communication is one of 44 departments and curricula in the College of Arts & Sciences. As the largest unit on campus, the College of Arts & Sciences forms the academic core of the Carolina experience. Through teaching, research, and service, the Department of Communication addresses how communication functions to create, sustain, and transform personal life, social relations, political institutions, economic organizations, and cultural and aesthetic conventions in society. Faculty conduct research and teach within a broad range of communication disciplines, including performance studies, media and technology studies, rhetoric, media arts production and new media, and organizational and interpersonal communication. Recognized for significant contributions to the profession, University, state, and nation, the Department houses a PhD program, a major in Communication, an interdisciplinary major in Cultural Studies, and a minor in Writing for the Screen and Stage. It serves as the intellectual home for 30 faculty members, 50 graduate students, and nearly 700 undergraduates. The Department's doctoral program offers a theoretically rich, interdisciplinary, problem-based approach to education and research that enables graduate students to define their own research in response to the changing demands of a constantly evolving communicative and cultural world. The Department's majors, as well as the hundreds of pan-University non-majors seek out our classes for a set of critical capacities that contribute to an engaged, creative, and critical 21st century citizen. Position Summary:

The Director of Media Art Space is responsible for the daily operations and the long-term needs of the Media Art Space (MAS) lab. The MAS lab, located on Franklin Street, is a Communication Department space where students focus on cinema arts, media production, new media arts and performance.

The MAS space is used by over 225 people a semester: faculty, staff, and students. The Director oversees technology and equipment needs, space allocation, and provides classroom support. In addition, they supervise a media technician, undergraduate learning assistants, federal work study students and interns. The Director manages administrative responsibilities, personnel policies, governance and internal communication as well as develops in conjunction with faculty and staff the site's standard operating procedures.

Duties typically involve troubleshooting and repair of A/V equipment, following through on long term fixes and lab upgrades including computers, audio and video equipment, orchestrating student/class management, working with the media technician to achieve pedagogical goals, researching purchases, and providing workshops. The Director allocates or spearheads Lab improvements, such as the recent construction of an animation studio. They are expected to research all purchases to achieve the best solution including longevity of equipment, and expected use engineering. In consultation with the department chair, they oversee a small equipment & technology budget, spending according to University protocols, and for exploring alternative funding sources to support MAS needs. Above all must possess the ability to creatively solve problems at a high level.

An ideal candidate will have experience in audio and video production. These may include live and studio recording, post-production, game design, audio design, mixing, mastering, producing, and directing.

This is a hybrid staff and teaching position. The MAS director will teach one class per semester in their area of expertise and in accordance with departmental needs.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities related to consulting or developing course content, curriculum, instructional technique/technology, distance education design, development or implementation, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Degree in an appropriate academic field is required (film, media production, new media, etc.). Substantial field experience will also be considered.

Organized, able to work effectively/efficiently, multitask and meet deadlines.

Demonstrated ability to manage classroom technology and solve problems.

Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

Ability to operate the lab including personnel, financial and facility actions.

Teaching experience.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

An MFA in media production is preferred.

An ideal candidate will have experience teaching audio and video production. These may include live and studio recording, post production, game design, audio design, mixing, mastering, producing, and directing.
