The Role

The SSN(X) Platform Machinery team is looking for a strong team leader to support the development of the next generation fast attack submarine. This is an exciting, once in a generation opportunity to get in at the beginning of an innovative and novel submarine design. You will join a strong, diverse team of engineers teaming with the Navy and industry to influence the critical functions and capabilities of what will become the world's most advanced and capable submarine.

The platform machinery teams are responsible for the concept design, development, and execution of complex machinery systems, including payloads, launch and recovery, control surfaces, masts and other systems in the non-propulsion plant areas of the submarine. The candidate will be responsible for the technical oversight and leadership of a team developing submarine machinery components. In this role they will be responsible for helping guide the development of innovative new designs, providing technical leadership and mentorship of the team, coordinating with Navy counterparts, the review of technical reports, conducting periodic briefs to the Navy, and the oversight of the team supporting their work.

They will be a team facilitator with strong communication skills, helping to inspire creative solutions to challenging design goals.

The position may require periodic travel to naval bases and facilities, ship visits, vendors, other NNS facilities or conferences.

Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master's Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 4 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

The ideal candidate should have a strong technical background with a comprehensive knowledge of the engineering and design process related to mechanical ship systems from the concept stage, through to manufacture and first article testing.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:
• Knowledge of submarine machinery and how it interfaces with the structural, electrical and hydraulic systems.
• Understanding of an array of mechanical products, including hydraulic actuators, linkages/cam-sliders, splined teeth and gears, structural weldments, welded or fastened joints and others.
• Experience in traditional and computer based methodologies for the design and analysis of components.
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal to support the development and presentation of technical reports, briefs to NNS leadership and NAVSEA, and coordinating with vendors and industry partners.
•Operational experience on commissioned or under construction Navy vessels is a plus.
