Posting Summary:The University of Vermont (UVM) is seeking a full-time Assistant Director to lead the team supporting animal research and research using biohazardous materials. The Assistant Director will report to the Research Protections Office which is the unit responsible for administering the University's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), Controlled Substance Committee (CSC), and the Institutional Review Boards (IRB). The Assistant Director will provide administrative oversight of all IACUC, IBC, and CSC research compliance activities. Key responsibilities include:
· Administrative operations to include staffing, communications and website presence, software evaluation· Committee administration requiring subject matter expertise, institutional leadership liaising, policy and procedure development, advisee· Education, Communication and Outreach by leading and executing educational outreach activities, providing leadership in implementing communication strategies and principles for internal and external communications, participation in professional networking and collaborations· Quality and Oversight to include development and supervision of post approval monitoring programs, principle in non-compliance investigations, metrics review and procedural improvements
The Research Protections Office has been delegated authority and responsibility by the Vice President for Research to administer research compliance areas at UVM including human subjects research, vertebrate animal research, recombinant DNA and biohazardous research, including viruses requiring high-containment, and research utilizing controlled substances.
This position has primary responsibility for providing specialized administrative support, regulatory compliance review and management of regulatory committees which include the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and the Controlled Substances Committee (CSC). The position ensures operational needs are being met, appropriate compliance with regulations, institutional and accrediting agency requirements, develops policies and procedures, and is first contact with our external regulators.
· Bachelor's degree in scientific discipline/life sciences (or relevant field)· Six or more years of experience in laboratory animal research, biosafety, use of controlled substances in research, administration, and program management.· Two to three years of supervisory experience.Minimum Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:· Six or more years of experience related to best practices and professional standards in research compliance administration, preferably in an academic research environment.· Strong proficiency in public speaking and writing. Must be comfortable speaking to large audiences and explaining complex regulatory requirements to both scientists and lay people.· Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to compose reports, correspondence, and summaries in a comprehensive and organized manner.· Advanced knowledge and ability to apply all relevant federal, state, and university regulations policies, and federal guidance documents.· Advanced knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research design, scientific research concepts and terminology.· Excellent knowledge of computer systems, their use, and applications; especially software applicable to protocol submission workflow management.· Capacity to handle multiple demands and competing priorities.· Demonstrated self-discipline and independent judgement completing highly complex, broadly defined assignments.· Strong understanding of skills and tasks to provide superior customer service to facilitate research.
Desirable Qualifications:· Advanced degree· Knowledge and experience with maintaining AAALAC accreditation.· Professional certification such as PRIM&R's CPIA certification.Knowledge of A/BSL-3 facilities.
Anticipated Pay Range:90,000 - 102,000
Special Conditions:External candidates must complete a 4-month probationary period, A probationary period may be required for current UVM employees, This position is eligible for a hybrid schedule with an option to split time between campus and elsewhere, in accordance with the university telecommuting policy, Background Check required for this position
