SHIFT: First Shift (6:00 AM to 2:30 PM)

Location/Division Specific Information: Our Hillsboro site produces elite electron microscopes used by scientists and engineers to drive innovation around the globe. This role works to produce-high quality components used in the world's finest microscopes operated by scientists like Nobel prize winners and researchers who imaged the COVID-19 virus. The machine shop Manufacturing Equipment Maintenance Technician (Machinist) is responsible for operating specialized machining equipment to produce parts according to the established parameters and specifications. Your expertise in manual machine operation will be crucial in ensuring the efficiency, accuracy, and safety of our manufacturing processes. This position collaborates with the entire site but reports directly to the Director of Operations.

What will you do?

  • Manually operate industrial machinery which includes Lathes, Bridgeport and Kent mills, grinders, and precision tolerancing equipment to cut, sand, knurl, drill, face, and turn in a metal work environment
  • Support machining requirements for entire business by applying a combination of machining experience, creativity and attention to detail
  • Translate requirements from drawings into measurements for production while inspecting parts to ensure that technical and quality standards are met.
  • Connect with leadership regularly to discuss technical barriers to execution.

How will you get here?

Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • A 2-year Trades degree preferred with 2+ years of experience as a manual operator Machinist OR a combination of education and experience that demonstrate the required skills. Military Technical Training in lieu of technical degree may also be considered.
Experience
  • At least 2 years of validated experience in a job-related industry with proficiency in operating machining equipment and machine programming
  • Specific experience using precision machining equipment; Lathes, Mills, Band Saw, Drill Press, Power tools, Centroid Software and BobCad Suite, etc.
  • Machine setup including loading raw material, selecting die set, and manually operating tool directionality and speed to create desired end product
  • Experience with ACU-RITE machining software interface a plus
  • Experience in lean manufacturing, 6S and continuous improvement a plus
  • Experience with Windows-based and MS Office programs a plus (Word, Excel, Outlook and Access)
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Ability to lift up to 35lbs
  • Skill to read drawings and turn raw material into the desired component while also performing basic troubleshooting of machining equipment and peripherals
  • Knowledge of taking measurements and applying mathematics to achieve the intended result while holding tolerances to .0005"
  • Proven ability in successfully working in a fast paced manufacturing environment
  • Able to follow detailed work instructions then optimally complete assigned tasks
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems independently as well as collaboratively
  • Ability to support projects, perform training and work efficiently as part of cohesive teams
  • Self-motivated, self-starter with strong organizational skills
  • Comfortable in a cleanroom environment using appropriate PPE as needed
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, successful in partnering with colleagues of differing cultural, language and educational backgrounds
