Job Summary:
Responsible for the management activities of hospital-based Sterile Processing Department(s)--either FMLH or both CHD campuses (FMFH and FWBH), in providing reprocessing of reusable surgical instrumentation and other medical devices for Surgical Services and other hospital-based departments and ambulatory clinic customers. Management activities include planning, organizing, coordinating, staffing, directing, controlling, and evaluating department operations. Assumes 24-hour operational and technical accountability for activities in compliance with established policies, procedures, and standard work for the Sterile Processing Department(s), including decontamination; preparation, packaging, and disinfection or sterilization; and appropriate transport or sterile storage. Maintains relevant subject matter expertise in medical device reprocessing, and serves as a resource for staff and customers. Sets organizational standards for technical processes; reprocessing workflows; staff training and competency validation; and documentation and record keeping of reprocessing activities. Ensures that applicable regulatory and technical standards of practice regarding medical device reprocessing are interpreted, implemented, and monitored for compliance within the department. Responsible for personnel management and cost effective utilization of resources.
EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION:
A minimum of 3 years of work experience in a peri-operative or peri-procedural environment is required, including 1 year minimum in a formal leadership role. In lieu of this, completion of an Administrative Fellowship in Healthcare Administration--with a rotation in Sterile Processing--will be considered. Experience specific to medical device reprocessing is preferred.
EDUCATION DESCRIPTION:
Bachelor's degree in Business, Health Administration or Nursing is required, or must be completed within one year of hire/promotion. In lieu of this, 5 years minimum leadership experience in a technical or production-based environment will be considered. Master's degree is preferred.
SPECIAL SKILLS DESCRIPTION:
Knowledge of Infection Control and Prevention; Knowledge of relevant The Joint Commission standards; Knowledge of asepsis, surgical techniques, instruments and patient care equipment. Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with various hospital and medical staff and outside vendors when gathering and exchanging information and with subordinates in providing effective leadership. May compile objective and measurable data and produce reports. Required to keep current with industry periodicals and literature. Has Specialized knowledge and technical expertise with sterilization and operating equipment. Competent computer skills including the ability to use Excel to input, organize and analyze data
LICENSURE DESCRIPTION:
Current or previous Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) from the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) from the CBSPD is preferred.
