The Neurodiagnostic Technologist III is responsible for the record the electrical activity of the central, peripheral and autonomic nervous systems using sophisticated electronic testing equipment conducting Electroencephalogram (EEG), Video EEG Monitoring, Ambulatory EEG Monitoring and Evoked Potential (EP) examinations, and all other Neurophysiology tests.
Essential Job Functions
• Prepares patient for the procedure ordered and documents information in digital EEG system. Obtains pertinent patient information/patient medical records for performing procedure. Explains procedure to patient and obtains patient's cooperation for best performance of procedure. Accurately measures prior to electrode/capsule application and prepares patient according to specific test procedure. Properly and accurately applies recording electrodes and lowers electrode resistance. Inputs appropriate patient information into computer.
• Operates instrument for the test performed. Ensures all equipment is operational prior to procedure. Troubleshoots equipment malfunction. Identifies and reports equipment problems to supervisor. Correctly performs mechanical and biological calibration on appropriate equipment.
• Performs appropriate procedure for physician interpretation. Evaluates patient referral and clinical notes to ensure appropriate testing is performed. Follows established test protocols. Recognizes and discriminates between normal and abnormal patterns/waveforms; deviates from procedure as appropriate. Changes instrument control settings as appropriate for optimum test results. Verifies that all data, calculations and patient information is correct.
• Responsible for cleanliness/maintenance of electrodes and follows established infection control guidelines.
• Interacts with patients according to patient care guidelines. Communicates appropriate test instructions to patient.
• Utilizes performance improvement principles to assess and improve quality.
• Maintains competency in all organizational, departmental and outside agency environmental, employee or patient safety standards relevant to job performance.
• Performs other duties as assigned or as needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.
• Verify the integrity of study.
• Acquires information and evaluation of the patient and their needs prior to the procedure.
• Maintains the digital EEG and long-term monitoring systems.
• Performs neurodiagnostic studies on inpatients and outpatients for interpretation by a neurologist.
• Performs record-keeping and other related paperwork including billing, filing, maintenance of logbooks and physical storage of records.
• Maintains the digital EEG and long-term monitoring systems.
• Provides clinical oversight for unregistered EEG technicians.
• Performs clinical neuro-diagnostic procedures.
• Participates in department projects, initiatives and continuing education.
• Develops workflows, policies, and procedures related to new/changes to technology or services.
• Provides direct/indirect procedural supervision for Tech I & student technologists.
• Evaluates/audits EEG quality, leading performance improvement initiatives using LEAN principles for obtaining the academic level standard of quality for EEG procedures.
• Performs electrode maintenance and impedance checks to ensure EEG quality. Performs EEG recording technology troubleshooting as needed and escalates appropriately.
• Performs long term video EEG set up & monitoring, electrocorticography, cortical stimulation mapping, routine and/or intra-operative somatosensory evoked potentials, and intra-operative EEG monitoring with/without robotics independently.
• Performs routine, extended, and ambulatory EEG recordings independently and at the highest levels of patient acuity. Analyzes live and delayed long term video EEG data independently and at the highest levels of patient acuity. Performs annotation and clipping of long-term video EEG data independently (academic locations only).
• Validates physician orders, enters relevant patient history information into the EEG recording system, enters long term video EEG set-up and disconnect notes into the electronic medical record. Enters procedure changes into the electronic billing system. Archives EEGtesting data.
• Performs EEG recordings at the senior level, and acts as lead technician on complex cases.
• Assists in training lower level EEG technicians and in orienting medical personnel such as residents and fellows.
• Performs evoked potential testing and neurodiagnostic monitoring in epilepsy.
• Assists in collecting and analyzing data for research studies.
• Financial accountability and other miscellaneous responsibilities associated with the charge process
