The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Pharmaceutical Care is seeking a full-time Pharmacy Technician, Certified or trainee to work in our Children's Hospital inpatient pharmacy. This position is under general pharmacist supervision, coordinates and performs as necessary the technical activities of dispensing areas. Under general supervision of technician supervisor, carries out activities supportive of development, coordination, and training of assigned areas. Provides functional supervision as required. This position will work rotating PM shifts between the hours of 2:30 pm - 11:30 pm, with alternating weekends.
The Department of Pharmaceutical Care intends to hire at either the Pharmacy Technician, Trainee classification, Pay Grade 8, or Pharmacy Technician, Certified, Pay Grade 10, based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. Duties to include:
Performs the following patient care responsibilities under the general supervision of a pharmacist:
Perform activities associated with inventory maintenance in dispensing areas including reviewing inventory for expiration dates.
Prepare drug orders written by physicians on inpatients and outpatients and patient care floor stock orders:
- Read and interpret the order
- Calculate the dose and/or quantity to dispense
- Prepare and/or package the correct medication
- Prepare the label
- Document activities (dispensing, inventory, inventory reduction, etc.) on appropriate forms
Deliver medications to patient care areas and return medications from patient care areas that are no longer needed.
Maintain accurate controls and security regarding controlled substances, including inventory records, preparation and delivery to patient care areas.
Generate, review and maintain (includes filing) appropriate records related to medication distribution, dispensing and disposal.
Utilize and maintain various automated equipment needed for the preparation of all types of medications.
Utilize aseptic technique in horizontal and vertical flow hoods to prepare sterile products, including cytotoxic and hazardous drugs, in single doses or in compounded batches. Maintain proper handling of cytotoxic and hazardous medications.
Understand the requirement of the different Risk Levels rooms within the pharmacy and perform duties in accordance with the required operating standards of each. Complete quality assurance activities and quality control records for documentation for sterile and non-sterile compounding.
Communicate with the general public, patients and other health care personnel in accordance with established departmental guidelines. Provide excellent customer service.
Perform tasks as assigned by the pharmacist, technician supervisor or senior technician.
Maintain area orderliness and cleanliness.
Conduct monthly inspections of medications in all pharmacy and patient care areas.
Assist with on-the-job training of pharmacy students and new technicians; may provide functional supervision to student technicians.
Perform other position expectations required of all department staff as outlined in department policies and procedures and/or material covered in staff training and/or orientation.

Certified Technician Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Registered with the Pharmacy Board at the time of hire.
National certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Must meet ongoing education requirements and maintain certification.
High school diploma or the equivalent.
Experience
Any combination of two years of post-high school experience and/or education in the natural sciences OR
Satisfactory completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program
Trainee Technician Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Registered with the Pharmacy Board at the time of hire.
All pharmacy technicians must be certified within one year of employment.
High school diploma or the equivalent.
Experience:
Any combination of two years of post-high school experience and/or education in the natural sciences OR
Satisfactory completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program.
Special Qualifications: - Ability to calculate ratios & proportions for pharmaceutical needs as demonstrated by a work sample.
Desired Qualifications: - Experience with inventory maintenance activities

- Experience working in detail-oriented work environment
- Knowledge of windows-based computer programs
- Experience working in environment requiring accuracy
- Experience working in healthcare with one-on-one patient interaction & experience handling challenging interactions in work environment.
- Prefer National Career Readiness Certificate at Silver Level
