Physician Scientists #RAD066
The University of Chicago

Chicago, Illinois

Description

The University of Chicago's Department of Radiology and University of Chicago Comprehensive Cancer Center are jointly searching for full-time faculty members at any rank. The primary academic appointment will be with the Department of Radiology with a joint appointment in the University of Chicago Comprehensive Cancer Center. If appropriate, joint appointments with other academic departments and units could be considered. Appointees will have leadership opportunities within the Clinical Theranostics program. Duties will include teaching and supervision of trainees. Academic rank and compensation (including a generous package of fringe benefits) are dependent upon qualifications.

Appointees will perform basic, translational and/or clinical research as applied to nuclear medicine, molecular imaging, nuclear cardiology, radionuclide therapy, especially those related to theranostics. Appointees are expected to help expand translational and clinical research programs in molecular imaging & theranostics, develop innovative approaches to improve radioisotope-based diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy, initiate and conduct relevant clinical trials, and characterize and assess the effectiveness of therapies, etc. Appointees will be provided a competitive start-up package and protected research time. Competitive research space and start-up funding will be available.

We anticipate that appointees will develop close interactions and collaborations with Radiology and Cancer Center colleagues, Section of Hematology and Oncology, Radiation and Cellular Oncology, scientists and investigators in other departments, divisions, centers and institutes at the University of Chicago, the University of Chicago Medical Center, Argonne National Laboratory, and/or Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. Appointees will have access to state-of-the-art core facilities and to outstanding colleagues and graduate students affiliated with numerous degree-granting programs within and outside the Biological Sciences Division and Medical Center, including those in the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering, the Physical Sciences Divisions, and other affiliated institutions of the University of Chicago as mentioned above.

The Department of Radiology has had a long history of pioneering research in Nuclear Medicine, since the post-WWII "Atoms for Peace" initiatives that led to the visionary Argonne Cancer Research Hospital built in 1953 on the University of Chicago Medical Center campus, which was dedicated to the peaceful use of atomic energy in medicine and biology. Supported by strong basic research programs in novel instrumentation, breakthrough radiochemistry, innovative imaging computing and analysis, our translational and clinical research in Nuclear Medicine has made several important historic and milestone contributions to the field. In early 2017, a new, 2nd-generation Cyclotron Facility was established and became operational, driving the new generation of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging & theranostics research toward a new horizon. A lead radiochemistry faculty who is also a licensed pharmacist recently arrived to further initiate, enhance, and accelerate the radiochemistry and nuclear medicine research programs. The Cyclotron Facility is currently implementing a cGMP project to expand radiotracer production and quality control/quality assurance capabilities, and to be in full regulatory compliance before mid-2024, to support and facilitate the rapid growth of the human clinical research and routine clinical practice expected in the near future. Appointees are expected to both contribute to and benefit from these ongoing programmatic developments.

Prior to the start of employment, qualified applicants must: 1) have a medical doctorate or equivalent, 2) hold or be eligible for medical licensure in the State of Illinois, and 3) be Board Certified in Nuclear Medicine from the American Board of Nuclear Medicine (ABNM) and/or American Board of Radiology (ABR) with subspecialty certification of Nuclear Radiology, or foreign equivalent Board certifications.

We especially welcome physician scientists and those with an additional PhD or equivalent in a relevant scientific field to apply. Additionally, we welcome applicants with a track record of extramural funding, a history of developing productive and funded research programs, clinical training in Nuclear Medicine, and expertise in broad practice of clinical Nuclear Medicine, including general nuclear medicine, nuclear cardiology, nuclear neurology, radionuclide therapy, and hybrid molecular imaging and application-specific imaging (e.g., PET/CT, SPECT/CT, etc.).

To be considered, those interested must apply through The University of Chicago's Academic Recruitment job board, which uses Interfolio to accept applications: http://apply.interfolio.com/135328. Applicants must upload a CV including bibliography, research statement, and teaching statement. Review of applications ends when the positions are filled.
