Position Summary:

The mission of the Sengupta-Krummel Neuro-Oncology laboratory is to revolutionize the treatment of malignant brain tumors through innovative approaches that reduce treatment toxicity and enhance therapeutic response. This lab, led by clinician-scientist Soma Sengupta, MD, PhD, MBA, and researcher Daniel Krummel, PhD, in the Neurosurgery & Neurology departments at UNC School of Medicine, is pioneering work on a new class of drugs that can sensitize tumors to radiation, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy while aiming to minimize toxic side effects for both adult and pediatric brain tumor patients.

The primary purpose of the Research Project Manager is to be responsible for the management and oversight of a research laboratory, participation in preparing posters and publications, participation in training and supervision of post-doctorate and/or other graduate as well as undergraduate trainees, management of ongoing grant funded research and future grant development.

The Sengupta-Krummel laboratory is pursuing translation-focused research that is at the interface of cancer, neuroscience, and immunology. The laboratory therefore seeks a Research Project Manager with experience in cancer biology, immune-oncology, and neuroscience or brain tumor biology. The Research Project Manager will join a highly interactive, supportive, and interdisciplinary group of faculty, staff scientists, and students. The Research Project Manager is expected to apply expertise for programs involving GABA-A receptors in lung cancer brain metastases funded by the American Brain Tumor Association as well as other projects funded for GABA related transcriptomics in metastatic melanoma, Glioma GABAergic signaling and electrophysiology, and Novel radiotracers in collaboration with Zibo Li to distinguish pseudo progression from true progression.

Other responsibilities include technical contribution to research publications and preliminary work for grants and funding applications, as well as collaborations with community-wide efforts aimed at promoting open, integrated, and rigorous practices in research, data curation, and scholarly communication. The Research Project Manager will also contribute to the overall mentorship of trainees within the Lab. Flexible work arrangements, including virtual/hybrid work locations, are an integral part of the School of Medicine's Working Forward initiative.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

A PhD in Cancer Biology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Immunology, immune-oncology, Genetics, neuroscience and/ or brain tumor biology as demonstrated by a strong track record of publications in these areas.

Expertise in culturing techniques of cancer, neural, and immune cells; immune cell isolation methods; flow cytometry techniques; Western blot and other common molecular biology techniques

Expertise in mouse models to include: analysis of mouse imaging data such as bioluminescence; analysis of immune-histochemistry slides; mouse planning and execution of mouse experiments including survival analysis.

Expertise in both in written and oral communications

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Completion of 3 to 5 years of post-doctoral research in cancer biology
Previous history of successful grant submission
Previous experience with IRB submissions
Previous publication history of cancer biology related work

Special Physical/Mental Requirements:

Ability to lift at least 25 lbs
