Summary

The Security Dispatcher reports directly to the Security Shift Supervisor and is responsible for providing efficient and effective customer service to all MWU campus community members. The role involves receiving phone calls, assigning security officers to calls for service and emergencies, utilizing radio equipment to communicate, and logging into all security activities during day and afternoon shifts. The dispatcher monitors university security cameras, the access system, VMS, and emergency security systems. Additionally, the Security Dispatcher may be scheduled to work various shifts, including holidays and weekends, to ensure coverage at the Welcome Center and perform security officer duties as needed. The hours for this position are Monday- Friday from 7:30 am-4:00 pm.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Dispatch Calls

  • Serve as the main point of contact for incoming calls to security.
  • Monitor and control radio communication for security personnel.
  • Organize calls for service including but not limited to, locking/unlocking classrooms, offices, dorms, buildings, motorist assistance, and emergency medical response, based on priority, and assign officers to calls utilizing the radio system.
  • Request supervisors to call when warranted.
  • Coordinate with supervisors regarding the assignment of additional officers to calls as needed.
  • In conjunction with the Welcome Center, ensure all alarms are assigned a patrol unit to handle.

Systems/Alarms

  • Enter all officer activity into the Report Management System.
  • Retrieve information from RMS, and RS2 Access System, and utilize proper alarm codes.
  • Work in conjunction with the Welcome Center to activate campus/clinic lockdowns when necessary.
  • Notify the Alarm Monitoring Center when buildings need to be taken out of service/deactivated.
  • Prepare written reports when necessary.
  • Notify the Assistant Director or designee of all major emergencies which occur on campus.
  • Facilitate administrative duties as assigned by the Shift Supervisor, Assistant Director, or Director.

Video System

  • Monitor and operate the University’s Video Management System. 
  • Make recommendations to the Assistant Director or designee and Director regarding camera views, locations, tour options, etc. to ensure the best possible use of the VMS in maintaining the safety of the Midwestern community. 
  • Perform minor tests of equipment related to dispatch and video management systems. 
  • Report any equipment failures to the Assistant Director or designee.

Perform the following tasks as assigned by Campus:  

  • Make university I.D.s, perform administrative duties in the security office.
  • Respond to calls for services as needed.
  • Act as a patrol officer during special events.
  • Perform traffic control when assigned.

CLERY Act Responsibilities

Midwestern University Safety and Security employees will complete training related to the Jeanne Clery Act, possessing an understanding of the Cleary Act itself and their role as a Campus Security Authority (CSA). CSA’s by virtue of their university responsibilities and under the Clery Act, are designated to receive and report Clery Crimes to the Department of Safety and Security so that they may be included and published in the university's Annual Security Report.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience              

High school diploma or GED with a minimum of 1-2 years security experience required.  Police, emergency dispatcher, higher education security, or proprietary security experience is preferred.  Must have the ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays. Certification in First Aid, CPR, and AED preferred.  Must possess a valid US driver’s license.

Computer Skills                                               

Familiarity with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook). 

Language Skills                                                

Intermediate skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization.

The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and sit.  The employee must frequently lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, required to lift 35 lbs. Employee must be able to stay focused and perform their duties over an 8-hour period of time. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
