Join our team of competent and compassionate professionals as a Senior Certified Peer Specialist at The Living Room with Behavioral Health Network!

The Senior Certified Peer Specialist provides opportunities for individuals receiving crisis services to direct their own recovery process (self-determination) and is an advocate for individuals' needs and rights. The Senior Certified Peer Specialist supports individuals served with navigating the mental health services system and exploring alternatives available in the peer and general community at large. Peer services are provided in the community, onsite at BHN's community behavioral health center, and at the peer led drop-in center.

Your experience, knowledge and great skills will support The Living Room (TLR) with the following:

  • Responsible for helping to run TLR shifts and delegating tasks as needed.
  • Communicating directly with program leadership in all areas of the program.
  • Assisting supervisors in managing program supplies and makes sure they are available for use.
  • Supporting and advocating for TLR guests.
  • Models personal responsibility, self-advocacy, and hopefulness through telling one's personal recovery story, and the tools and strategies that support one's recovery.
  • Supporting individuals served during transition periods to increase access to and utilization of community resources.
  • Ensuring that the program remains clean, neat, and organized at all times.
  • Responsible for ensuring that TLR values are understood and adhered to by TLR staff and guests.
  • Supporting individuals served to develop alternative strategies during times of emotional distress to reframe "crisis" responses.
  • Supporting individuals served in emotional distress by listening and "being there" for them.
  • Sharing information about all community resources, including other peer-run groups, housing and benefit resources, and community events.
  • Upon the request of the individual served, offers support and advocacy in treatment or other community settings.
  • Remaining up to date on current resources and knowledge of the recovery movement by attending training and reading related articles and/or books as available


What are we looking for in a Senior Certified Peer Specialist ?
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Lived experience of a psychiatric diagnosis, extreme emotional states, and/or trauma.
  • 1+ year(s) recovery.
  • 6+ months of prior experience as a Certified Peer Specialist required.
  • Peer Specialist Certification or the ability to obtain certification within 12 months of hire (original date of hire, not the date transitioned into this position) required.
  • Access to reliable transportation (with access to your own vehicle) required.
  • Bilingual/bicultural in English and American Sign Language or Spanish preferred but not required.
  • Ability to act as an advocate and empower individuals to take leadership in their own recovery.
  • Ability and willingness to share own recovery story in an open and skillful manner.
  • Safe and approachable demeanor, including when under pressure.
  • Respectful of and compassionate toward other individuals' thoughts, behaviors, ideas, and needs.
  • Ability to be self-aware and able to take responsibility for own mistakes, successes, weaknesses, and strengths, as well as being able and willing to seek support when needed.
  • Optimistic and confident demeanor in approach and outlook
