Our inquiry and impact spans from the edge of theory to human-computer interaction to Data Science. We are part of the Physical Sciences Division which includes academic departments and several interdisciplinary research institutes and centers.

Job Summary:

A Service Worker is responsible for providing support to the Manager to carry out the daily operational needs of the Computer Science department. Responsibilities include office/lab relocations, furniture moving, shipping/receiving activities, mail delivery, and conference rooms set up.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain database of building occupants, gates, key codes, room locations, phone, and fax numbers.
  • Distribute keys to faculty, students, and staff and maintain distribution records.
  • Maintain and update photo directory on the Computer Science website.
  • Communicate with clarity and interact with faculty, postdocs, students, and staff on a daily basis.
  • Assist the Manager with the day-to-day operations including assembling and disassembling of furniture as needed; assist with, but not limited to, office relocations, furniture moving, shelving and removal of other equipment as necessary.
  • Assist with the preparation of conference room set ups for faculty meetings and seminars in the building.
  • Perform daily building inspections; identifying maintenance issues; forwarding/submitting work orders; and tracking the progress of the work orders.
  • Coordinate annual floor waxing and carpet cleaning with facility services.
  • Responsible for all incoming and outgoing shipments and packages for the Computer Science department; pick up packages from the first desk clerk when notified; maintain accurate shipping and receiving records and distribute incoming packages; coordinate pc/mac recycling with ITS; take pallets to dock/disposal.
  • Deliver and pick up mail and faculty exchange.
  • Sort and deliver mail to each floor and place in the mailboxes.
  • Update mailboxes directories on both floors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to multitask, and to deal calmly and patiently with wide range of personalities required.
  • Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are all required.
  • Able to deal with constant interruptions and perform concurrent tasks.
  • Good problem-solving skills required.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Must be attentive to building occupants' needs.
  • Must maintain a professional approach when working with faculty and staff are all required.
  • Able to make judgments and decisions on own; and independent thinking is required.

Additional Requirements


Education, Experience, or Certifications:

Education:
  • High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience:
  • Previous experience in a facilities environment and shipping/receiving center preferred.
  • Prior reliable attendance record required.

Technical Knowledge or Skills:
  • Working knowledge of personal computers, including e-mail, Microsoft Word and Excel, database management preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and follow technical manuals, preferred.
  • Mechanical aptitude to assemble furniture and basic carpentry is preferred.
  • Able to use hand tools and power tools.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
  • Position requires the ability to lift 50 pounds; being able to walk long distances, climb ladders, and use stairs.
  • Physically fit, able to handle moving and relocating office furniture required.
  • Frequent keyboarding and reading on-screen code; use of a mouse.

Pay Range:
  • $20.83
