The college has served students in the Lewis County region since 1925 and is the oldest continuously operating community college in Washington State. In addition to the main campus in Centralia, Centralia College East in Morton is a smaller site that serves the needs of students in east Lewis County. Job Description

This position reports to the Upward Bound Director and participates in the daily operation of the Upward Bound program. This is a federally funded, 11-month exempt position. The continuance of this position is dependent upon grant funding. The position requires the ability to teach a variety of workshops; manage a diverse caseload of approximately 30-40 low-income, disadvantaged secondary students with the potential to be first-generation college students; provide academic support services that motivate and prepare students for college; and meet program enrollment, retention, standardized-testing, secondary graduation, and post­secondary enrollment objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Identify and determine participant ability to complete secondary and postsecondary education programs;

  • Secure appropriate documentation for participant eligibility and maintain accurate records;

  • Complete student need's assessments;

  • Maintain regular meeting schedule with students;

  • Maintain regular school visit schedule to one or more high schools;

  • Initiate, organize, coordinate, and implement program academic curriculum including the six-week summer program;

  • Provide, or guide students to, academic tutoring (basic math through Algebra) and teach a variety of classes and workshops;

  • Develop educational plans with students and provide proactive intervention as appropriate;

  • Provide academic advice to students individually and collectively;

  • Provide career planning and academic preparation required for various educational opportunities and post-secondary education;

  • Provide scholarship, financial aid, and college admissions information and application assistance to students and parents, as needed;

  • Disseminate UB program information and develop, coordinate, and maintain a positive working relationship with target schools, college campus, and community agencies;

  • Monitor and track student progress completing appropriate records and reports;

  • Contribute to the development of lessons for online or in-person delivery;

  • Monitor completion of lessons on online platforms;

  • Contribute to the maintenance of accurate information in all program-related databases and online platforms;

  • Attend and participate in job related training, workshops and conferences;

  • Other duties, as assigned, that contribute to the mission of Upward Bound.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Education or closely related field from an accredited college or university

Preferred Qualifications
  • Overcome barriers like those of program participants

  • Demonstrated ability in tutoring

Other Qualities:

  • Experience teaching or tutoring basic math through Algebra;

  • Experience with, and ability to recruit, socially, economically, and educationally disadvantaged individuals who are interested in pursuing post-secondary education as first-generation college students;

  • Ability to collect, organize, and analyze student information through records, tests, and interviews;

  • Ability to appraise interests, aptitudes, abilities, and personal characteristics of students for education planning;

  • Ability to advise students academically for high school graduation and college eligibility;

  • Ability to plan, teach, and motivate students to learn and to matriculate to college;

  • Knowledge of financial aid resources and college application process;

  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends;

  • Demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communications skills;

  • Ability to use and/or learn computer software programs in the Microsoft Office suite, Google products, and student/learning management tools and databases;

  • Ability to drive an 8-passenger van with high school students as passengers;

  • Willingness to attend and participate in state, regional, or national conferences, trainings, and associations for educational opportunity programs;

  • Transportation for travel to target schools.

Conditions of Employment

This is an eleven (11) month per year, full-time professional technical overtime eligible exempt position. The salary is $44,427.18 - $44,427.18 (DOQ/DOE) annually depending on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. The state of Washington provides a comprehensive benefits package for state employees. The position may participate in the TIAA/CREF retirement system.

Annual Salary: $44,427.18 - $44,427.18 (DOQ/DOE)
