Overview
The Vice President of Academic Affairs (VP of AA) has executive responsibility for Wellstar's:
oStrategy to build and enhance partnerships with academic institutions (e.g., Kennesaw State, Mercer and Augusta Universities, etc.),
oEnterprise-wide campus outreach and communications plan to convey Wellstar's priorities, resources and opportunities to support Academic Partners and to enhance the academic enterprise across Wellstar.
oAdvancement of a research agenda that contributes to the development of cutting-edge therapies and the overall improvement of medical science and healthcare delivery through the Wellstar Research Institute
oAssessment of academic affairs and partnership outcomes and organizational effectiveness.
oFostering interprofessional education and research through the coordination of academic programs.
oSupport and oversight of the continued success of the large portfolio of residency and fellowship programs across Wellstar and serves as a liaison between Wellstar and all accreditation organizations in Graduate Medical Education.
oExpansion of Undergraduate Medical and allied health Education programs (e.g., medical students, APP students, Nursing, Pharmacy students, etc)
oCompliance with regulatory standards (e.g., ACGME, ABMS, AMA-CME, CNE, etc)
oServes as the Designated Institutional Officer (DIO) and Chief Academic Officer for clinical research program and for Wellstar.
oDay-to-day operations of the Academic Enterprise including Library and management of the functional space and equipment acquisition and maintenance of Simulation Labs.
oPrimary leadership responsibility for planning, implementing, coordinating and reviewing academic partnerships and programs across Wellstar.
oOversees the administrative function of multidisciplinary student placements across Wellstar and the full continuum of care including new and innovative program placements such as virtual health.
oAdditionally, the VP Academic Affairs collaborates with and supports other Wellstar executives to achieve success in:
oWorkforce Development strategies to build key talent pipelines focused on clinical, non-clinical roles and innovative roles (Internship and Career Mobility Programs such as CNA, CMA, RT Internship and other programs)
oCreate innovative talent acquisition strategies (e.g., training and hiring of physicians following Wellstar residencies, as well as nurses and allied health personnel)
oDiversity, equity and inclusion strategies that support a diverse workforce Wellbeing and resiliency strategies for our student and instructor populations
oInterprofessional clinical learning environments (e.g., with Organizational Learning),
oCoordination, standardization and optimization of Wellstar's 18,000 learner rotations annually (e.g., with Nursing and Org Learning),

The successful candidate will need command of the following Leadership Skills: (a) communicate authentically and effectively with varied audiences through a variety of channels; (b) garner trust and influence among those audiences; (c) harvest the wisdom of past experiences and current SMEs to develop a strategic point-of-view for growth and development of The Program; (d) create a plan to implement that strategic point-of-view, and (e) use a validated methodology for structured change management to make the implementation successful.

Responsibilities
Core Responsibilites and Essential Functions

  • Development of Academic Affairs Department
    The VP of AA will be responsible for developing a comprehensive and integrated academic affairs organization with a single point of executive accountability for education and research through, the production and execution of a business plan, change management strategy, communication plan, and deliverables. Deliverables will include:
    o Establish an oversight structure to provide a voice for education and research within WellStar and with external partners.
    o Coordinate program development and operations and stimulate innovation and interprofessional learning to meet future workforce needs.
    o Draft a revised organizational chart that supports and fosters interprofessional education and research with job titles, reporting relationships, FTEs, and associated job descriptions outlining individual roles and responsibilities.
    o Propose a transition plan to move from the current state to the revised organizational structure, including financial impact, timeline for transition, and key required communications.

    Integration of Operations
    Identify opportunities for integration and standardization within all departments. Will develop metrics, operational and financial, as related to academic enterprise, inclusive of associated ambulatory clinics and training sites.
  • Academic Affiliations and Partnerships
    Provide Executive oversight of growth initiatives with major academic partners in partnership with executive and senior leadership to advance WellStar's academic enterprise goals. This will include selecting and developing three to four major academic relationships with key institutions in the WellStar footprint:
    o Conduct a comprehensive assessment of the impact of branch campus development (e.g., operational, financial, physician/faculty complement and deployment, available partner resources).
    o Develop, communicate, and implement standard policies and procedures to address and streamline the processing of requests from external partners for clinical rotations, research
    agreements, and other minor/transactional agreements related to education and research.
  • Clinical Learning Environment
    Will ensure that ACGME and other accrediting bodies regulatory requirements are met for each site, confirming the environment is in alignment with enterprise goals across the system.
  • Continuing Education and Interprofessional Education
    Will oversee day to day operations and continued accreditation of all CME Programs. Provide leadership in WellStar's desire to become accredited in Interprofessional Continued Education (IPCE), leading the market and delivering the gold-standard in continuing education.
  • Research Institute
    Provide executive leadership for the WRI, supportive of the new academic enterprise and program growth.
  • Library Services
    Provide executive leadership for library services and educational content across the new academic enterprise.
  • Simulation
    Provide executive leadership for simulation functional space and equipment needs across the new academic enterprise, with a commitment to becoming a center of excellence.
    Works in partnership with Organizational Learning to support OL's responsibility and oversight of simulation lab scheduling and optimizing simulation lab utilization across departments and disciplines.
  • Graduate Medical Education
    Must implement a GME portfolio management process that encompasses all postgraduate physician training throughout WellStar.
    Consolidate all WellStar GME accreditation under a single ACGME-accredited institutional sponsor (i.e., WellStar).
    Oversee growth initiatives as related to GME.
    Undergraduate Medical Education
    Leverage strategic academic partnerships to develop and implement long-term undergraduate medical education strategy.
    Create UME department to oversee all medical student education across the academic enterprise.

  • Qualifications
    Required Minimum Education

  • Doctorate Required
  • PhD Preferred

  • Required Minimum Experience

  • Minimum 8 years progressively more responsible experience in administrative duties in a large academic health care organization; demonstrated knowledge of graduate medical education (GME) experience required; demonstrated knowledge of academic environments, research and interprofessional education. Required

  • Required Minimum Skills

  • Ample evidence must exist for expertise in adult learning in general, and healthcare learning in particular.
  • Work collaboratively and build strong relationships with Academic Partners and internal stakeholders
  • Organize and lead strategic assessment, gap analysis, and benchmarking to support implementation of priorities and ensure alignment with Academic Partner priorities.
  • In-depth understanding of Academic Institutions and pipeline development strategies.
  • Develop and coordinate a strategic campus outreach and communication plan to convey Wellstar's priorities, resources, and opportunities to support Academic Partners.
  • Engage faculty and campus partners to ensure that the student research and learning experience is consistent with support for student wellness.
  • Strategic, operational, and programmatic oversight of all research efforts; Development and implementation of a strategic research plan to develop a robust research enterprise.
  • Innovative thinker who seeks innovative solutions to problem solving and is a critical thinker
  • Experience with ACGME application, self-study, annual update and site visit preparation is required.
  • Multi-site leadership preferred.
  • Leadership skills including demonstrated willingness to pursue leadership roles with increasing levels of accountability, comfort with decision-making, coaching, teaching and counseling skills, and the ability to inspire and build confidence in others and to forge alliances and garner support.
  • In-depth understanding and technical knowledge of the administrative, operational, and medical/clinical aspects of healthcare functions and facilities including human, legal, technological, fiscal and customer aspects of patient care in an academic medical center.
  • Project management skills including the ability to define program, project, or process objectives, and resource allocation is strongly preferred.
  • Experience building relationships with HBCUS, HSIs and other diverse Academic Partners preferred.
  • Experience with start-ups preferred.
  • Experience with curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation preferred.
