Job Summary

Reporting to the Faculty Director, the Implementation Coordinator for Public Thinking will have a broad mandate to help design, develop, and oversee the program in its first three years. The role will focus on creating a stable base of curricular and extracurricular activities while helping to hire and develop the staff necessary to move the program forward in the future. This person will also be responsible for cultivating relationships between the program staff and faculty throughout the humanities and social sciences, including helping to assemble and communicate with a faculty board.

Finally, the Implementation Coordinator will be the connection point between the University, The Point magazine, and other stakeholders such as donors and visiting lecturers and fellows. This position manages academic, research, clinical or administrative programs of the University. This position is funded by external gifts and is time-limited to three years.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the development and implementation of program initiatives, ensuring alignment with the program's goals and mission.
  • Participates in design, promotion, and deliberation over new staff positions within the program.
  • Expands existing summer workshops, lecture series, and events to engage a broader audience.
  • Develops and implements a new curriculum for undergraduate students.
  • Coordinates with team members from The Point magazine and the University of Chicago to ensure seamless program execution.
  • Monitors and evaluates program offerings, making adjustments as needed to meet objectives and make sure the program remains in dialogue with public events.
  • Manages communication and outreach efforts to promote program activities and events.
  • Collaborates with Faculty Director in the development and drafting of grant proposals, managing relations with foundations, and fundraising.
  • Facilitates partnerships with external organizations and individuals to enhance program offerings.
  • Evaluates overall impact and performance of relevant programming and events, and prepares yearly report for main donor.
  • Uses moderate/solid understanding and experience to administer the delivery of services to program participants and/or beneficiaries.
  • Has moderate/high levels of interactions with faculty, researchers and staff for committee work or information.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:
  • Master's degree or PhD in the humanities or social sciences.

Experience:
  • At least five years of experience in fields related to public discourse, such as journalism, the arts, politics or cultural commentary.
  • Teaching experience in the humanities or social sciences.
  • Designing large-scale programs or projects, including curriculum design, and with managing people.
  • Background working with project-based faculty and student relations, university administrative procedures, and financial planning and budget management.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Proficiency in Mac and PC environments.
  • Proficiency in Word, Outlook, Excel, and on-line organizational tools.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills including excellent editing/proofreading ability in English.

Preferred Competencies
  • Understanding of the values, habits and communication of a university scholarly community.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish good working relationships with people of different backgrounds.
  • Strong organizational skills, prioritize and manage concurrent tasks with interruptions, meet deadlines, and respond to many emails, in-person and phone requests in a timely fashion.
  • Demonstrated ability to speak publicly and conduct public events.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with faculty.
  • Handle multiple concurrent tasks in a competent and professional manner while also meeting deadlines.
  • Work effectively with supervision and as a part of a team, individually, or while taking directions from others.
  • Run meetings and make presentations.

Working Conditions

  • Travel frequently.
  • Fast-paced environment .
  • Sit at a computer for 4-6 hours.
  • This is a part-time position of approximately 25 hours per week.
