About the Department

The NSF-QuBBE Quantum Leap Challenge Institute of the University of Chicago is one of the five National Quantum Centers funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). This institute seeks to advance the frontiers of science and to develop new innovative technologies in the field of Quantum Sensing for Biophysics and Bioengineering. The institute involves 23 faculty across four Universities which include the University of Chicago, Chicago State University, the University of Illinois in Chicago, and Harvard University. As we advance our scientific grand challenges, we strive to promote workforce development across the south side and the west side of Chicago. An aspect of our mission is to help young people achieve success in STEM and quantum careers.

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly self-propelled and highly motivated individual who continuously educates themselves in innovations in the field of quantum technologies and then effectively communicates this newly acquired knowledge and awareness to young people around the south side and the west side of Chicago. The objective is to increase the level of awareness of young people, particularly high-school students, regarding future career opportunities in the newly emerging industries based on quantum technologies. The Marketing and Outreach Coordinator should strive to help young people gain an appreciation for the fact that newly emerging exciting high-paying jobs could be within their reach through acquiring an education in the area of sciences and technologies.

This position facilitates student communication and serves as a liaison between the young students in Chicago and the scientists, educators, faculty, students, and administrators working at these four universities. The ultimate objective is to facilitate the success of students in the south side and the west side of Chicago who wish to enter educational programs in sciences and technologies at various universities. The coordinator will assist members of the NSF-QuBBE-QLCI program in getting young Chicago students excited, and help the students succeed in achieving success in life through acquiring advanced education and training in the fields of sciences and technology.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a liaison and conduct visits to the local high schools and academic institutions in the Chicago area and meet with students, educators, and administrators.
  
• Conduct on-campus events at the University of Chicago, Chicago State University, and the University of Illinois in Chicago, in which local students from Chicago Public Schools can meet and work with the faculty, students, and administrators of these NSF-QuBBE-QLCI universities.
  
• Organize events at the local high schools during which information is offered to the high-school students about pursuing college-level educational opportunities in the fields of sciences and technology.
  
• Organize for faculty, educators, university students, and university administrators of the participating NSF-QuBBE-QLCI universities to give lectures, and seminars and conduct workshops at local high schools to help the local high school students in any way possible.
  
• Prepare workshops in which university administrators explain to high-school students the way to seek financial aid to finance their college education.
  
• Propose ways to reach the local high-school students better and help them succeed in their efforts to get into college and gain a higher level of university education.
  
• Assist university faculty in preparing grant proposals related to getting funding for initiatives related to workforce development in the south side and the west side of Chicago.
  
• Assists with planning and implementing program marketing activities, including the development of publications and Web site.
  
• Gathers and analyzes data concerning program performance, and writes reports. Monitors program budgets.
  
• May review work of and serve as a resource to program support staff and program instructors.
  
• Performs other related work as needed.
  

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

• Bachelor's degree with a focus on marketing and business fields of study.
  

Experience:

• Previous experience with outreach, specifically with activities related to high-school students in the south side of Chicago.
  
• Previous experience with coaching or mentoring youths.
  

Certifications:

• Valid driver's license.
  

Technical Knowledge or Skills:

• Computer Skills comprising of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).

• Ability to provide a positive representation of the NSF-QuBBE-QLCI organization, and the University of Chicago, to high-school students and their staff around the south side and the west side of Chicago.

• Fluent in both English and Spanish languages.
